Protection & Finishes

The salty, corrosive air of the Devon and Cornwall coast can cause unprotected steel to rust in a matter of weeks, significantly shortening the product’s lifespan. To protect your investment, we provide a comprehensive range of industry-leading finishing services.

For maximum defence in harsh environments, we often recommend a combination of two finishes. A powder coat or paint finish on top of a galvanised base will provide unparalleled corrosion protection with a perfect aesthetic finish.

  • Galvanising, often the minimum protection we recommend. We use hot-dip galvanising, which involves submerging the steel in molten zinc to create a tough, bonded coating to significantly extend the life of your product. The Zinc layer provides 2 levels of protection.

    1. Physical barrier: The zinc protects the steel underneath from the elements, completely sealing it off from moisture, oxygen and salt in the air.

    2. Sacrificial protection: If the zinc layer is damaged, it will effectively heal itself, preventing rust from forming on the steel.

  • Powder coating is the process of spraying an electrostatically charged polymer resin onto the steel, providing a superior finish that is both highly durable and visually stunning.

This process offers several key advantages:

    • Exceptional Durability: The cured coating is significantly tougher than conventional paint. It creates a hard-wearing finish that resists chipping, scratching, and fading from UV light.

    • Stunning Aesthetics: Powder coating is available in a virtually limitless range of colours, textures, and finishes—from high gloss and matte to metallic and textured effects. Talk to us about customisation for your project.

    • A Greener Choice: The application process produces very little waste, and unlike many liquid paints, it emits virtually zero Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Ideally suited for items subjected to heavy use. It’s an excellent standalone finish or can be applied over galvanising to provide the ultimate in protection and style.

  • Spray painting is the ultimate finish for customisation and precision. Painting provides a seamless barrier finish which shields the steel from the elements, preventing rust and oxidation. Spraying painting is a highly versatile finish, lighter than powder coating, making it ideal for intricate fabrications where preserving fine detail is paramount.

Spray painting offers several key benefits:

    • Customisation: With a virtually unlimited colour palette, we can match any colour standard (like RAL or Pantone) to meet specific branding guidelines or aesthetic goals. We also offer a wide variety of finishes, from matte to high gloss.

    • Versatility: Spray painting is not limited by a component's size or shape. It's the perfect solution for large-scale structures, on-site touch-ups and for applying a topcoat over a galvanised base for added protection.

    • Fast application: It’s quick to apply and cover large areas, ideal when projects require a fast turnaround.
